Black Box Inventor From LeClaire, IA

Posted: Updated:

The black box is important because it helps investigators figure out what caused the accident and one local man is responsible for the early invention of the device.

More than 100 years ago, James J Ryan was born in LeClaire, Iowa.

Later he became a mechanical engineer, professor and the inventor of the black box. His work can be seen at the Buffalo Bill Museum in LeClaire.

"There is no doubt about the fact that he was a pioneer in the field," Buffalo Bill Museum executive director Bob Schiffke said.

The black box isn't James Ryan's only invention. He's also responsible for the retractable seat belt.
