Local EMS And New Heroin OD Suggestions

Heroin overdoses are rapidly on the rise that is according to US Attorney General Eric Holder but there is a way to help combat these overdoses with the use of a drug called narcan.

Area hospitals carry it but now holder is pushing to get it in the hands of first responders across the US, possibly saving more lives.

Quad Cities first responders are already ahead of the efforts saying they've been using it since the 80's and explain to us how it works.

"Basically it reverses the respiratory depression and level on consciousness of the patient," EMS system coordinator at Genesis, Chris Webster said.

But they say they don't just use it for heroin overdoses. It's more widely used for prescription drug abuse.

Right now, police in Illinois are authorized to use the drug but Iowa police are not.
