Bettendorf city leaders are moving forward to seek funding for a new sports complex.
The Spencer Creek Sports Facility would be equipped with Olympic size pool, hockey rinks and areas used to play basketball, volleyball, and gymnastic tournaments.
In addition to the facility, the city is considering putting a hotel, business park and shopping center in the Spencer Creek area but those new attractions could create competition with other facilities in the area.
"The Quad Cities is a great area, but it can only support so much," Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba said. "There's only so much disposable income the public has so you gotta be careful and not duplicate efforts."
The city agreed to apply for $62-million through the Iowa Economic Development program. The program would redirect a portion of the state's share of hotel and sales taxes to reinvestment in new developments.
