Bullying Help In And Outside Of Iowa Schools

Iowa lawmakers are hoping to stop bullying both inside and outside of schools with a new bill.

It would give schools more power to intervene and investigate bullying outside of school including on social media sites. Local officials say they would only step in now if the bullying was affecting learning inside school walls and they say schools can only do so much.

"I think it has to be what we can handle, what we can control," Garfield Elementary counselor Candy Reed said. "We can control maybe what happens within our building, during our school day. I'm not sure about the rest of the day, I think that would be very difficult."

The proposed legislation calls for training to help administrators and teachers recognize the signs of bullying.
Lawmakers say they hope to pass the bill sometime in the next month.
