Many area cities are checking their salt supply to make sure they have enough to last throughout this winter and one city is already seeing a shortage.
Blue Grass public works director Lonnie Robertson says the city has to ration out the remainder of the salt. At the beginning of the winter the city had about 200 tons of it. Now the city only has about 60.
Officials say they haven't been treating the side streets in an effort to make what they have last.
"Instead of salting a mile of road, I might go through and every 100 yards, put little salt down and that way when traffic goes through, it will track it through," Robertson said. "So I might go 100 yards and skip 100 yards."
Robertson says the city has requested more salt from its supplier but there is no guarantee they will get it.
