A man is recovering after surviving a 50-foot fall at the Holiday Inn in downtown Rock Island, Ill.
Police say the 19-year-old fell from the hotel's eighth floor balcony down to a third floor roof around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday.
Firefighters used a ladder as a bridge to the roof from another balcony, putting the man in a basket and lowering him to the ground. Crews say this kind of emergency is uncommon but they're trained to handle situations like this.
"We're constantly training on these types of situations, whether it be high angle, trench, confined space, whatever it may be," said Rock Island Asst. Fire Chief, Jeff Yerkey.
"It's always really rewarding for our guys when they're able to work through something like this and take care of a situation that's a little more challenging than our day today routines."
The man who fell from the hotel balcony was conscious when rescue crews got to him, but he had multiple injuries and was suffering from cold exposure.
