Staying safe this Halloween as new laws in Illinois help protect trick-or-treaters from sex offenders, but similar laws in Iowa do not exist.
In Illinois, sex offenders can not hand out candy on Halloween and they can't take children trick-or-treating. Although it's not recommended in Iowa, there are no laws preventing sex offenders from participating in the holiday.
Now authorities are reminding parents how they can avoid those homes no matter what side of the river by just simply pulling up the state sex offender registry on the phone or tablet.
"Just zoom in onto the general area where you live, the pinpoints pretty much indicate the general area that a sex offender does live," said Det. Thomas Leonard, of the Scott County Sheriff's Department.
