CHICAGO, Oct. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Jose R. Cabanas, the highest- ranking Cuban official in the United States met with famed Chicago matrimonial attorney Jeffery M. Leving Wednesday October 23rd at a special event hosted by the Council on Latin American Relations. Leving, an internationally known Chicago custody attorney, was instrumental in reuniting Elian Gonzalez with his father in Cuba.
"It was a great honor to meet Dr. Cabanas. Helping Elian return to his loving father in Cuba was one of my proudest moments as an attorney," states Leving. "I believe that father/child relations should be independent of political issues."
To secure Elian's return to his father, Leving worked cooperatively with Johanna Tablada, a former director of U.S. affairs at Cuba's Foreign Ministry. Leving also represented Elian's great uncle, Manuel Gonzalez, in hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee concerning Elian's plight at the invitation of Senators Ted Kennedy and Patrick Leahy.
