Community members joined together for a packing party in Davenport on Sunday. They were putting together care packages from home for sailors aboard the USS Shoup.
It's all part of Molly's Adopt a Sailor program, a nationwide effort started by Navy moms to support deployed service members in all military branches.
The Davenport Legion hoped to ship more than 65 boxes this weekend.
"They've been deployed for about five months with no hope of coming home anytime soon, so we want to remind them that they are remembered and that we wanted to give them a little bit of home during Thanksgiving," Ruth Clayton-Davis, a Navy mom who took part in this local packing party, said.
Organizers say adopted sailors typically request things like shampoo, chap stick, pillow cases, and comfort food.
But, they say the most important items are always cards, letters, and pictures.
