Atalissa Man Accused of Leading Police Chase

Posted: Updated:

One man is facing a long list of charges this weekend, accused of leading Atalissa Police on a high speed chase early Saturday morning.

22-year-old Jose Hernandez is being held in the Muscatine County Jail on a $10,000 cash only bond.

He's charged with, among other things, eluding police, operating while intoxicated, harassment of a public official, and no driver's license.

Police say they were trying to pull him over for a traffic violation when he took off, reaching speeds of nearly 90 miles per hour as he fled.

The vehicle was pursued by officers south on Kelly Avenue to 140th Street, then West to the 1800 block of 140th Street where a P.I.T. (Pursuit Intervention Technique) was used to end the chase.

Police say Hernandez attempted to drive through a ditch and a yard, then attempted to flee on foot, before he was apprehended.

There was minor damage sustained to the Atalissa Police Department squad car and Hernandez' vehicle as a result of the P.I.T.

The Atalissa Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the Muscatine County Sheriff's Office and West Liberty Police Department.
