Bettendorf Residents File Suit Against City For Sewage Backup Problems
Sewage backups in Bettendorf homes are forcing some residents to take action against the city.
Homeowners along River Drive and Grant Street say they are fed up with the on-going problems. In the past, they've tried to work with the city to find a solution but city officials say the sewer back-ups are an "act of god."
These homeowners disagree saying the issue is in the sewer system. After losing household belongings and sinking thousands of dollars into repairs the group believes a lawsuit encourages action.
"The basic problem was the city hasn't fixed the underlying sewer system so this could happen again, next week, next month, or next year unless the city grabs the bull by the horns and corrects the problem," said Michael Meloy, attorney for the residents.
At least four lawsuits have been filed so far with possibly more from other neighbors on the way.
The city is using outside attorneys to review the claims. They have until September 28th to respond.
