It was a scary situation near a Fort Madison school as a man was found shot around the same time the students were let out of school.
On the 1400 block of Avenue F and Avenue G, neighbors gave first aid to 25-year-old Matthew Griffins until police arrived on September 23rd.
He had been shot in the leg just a block away from Lincoln Elementary School. Police say responding to the call was chaotic and they didn't have time to lock down the school, but they believe no students were in danger.
"The shooter was not still in the area, wasn't still present and a threat," said Fort Madison Police Chief Bruce Niggemeyer. "We determined from a witness they had left, so we were relatively sure that person wasn't in the area any longer."
Police say they do not have a suspect yet but if anyone has information they're asked to contact police.
