Remembrances were held across the US on the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Bells tolled, bagpipes blared, names were read and Americans wept.
It was the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that ushered in a new era of terrorism and forever changed our country and our world. Remembrances were held across the US, most notably at the three sites where so many perished.
Nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost, including 343 firefighters and dozens of police officers.
"Our hearts still ache for the futures snatched away, the lives that might have been," said President Obama.
It has also been designated by Congress as a national day of service with many Americans spending the day performing charitable acts, in honor of the 9/11 victims and survivors.
