Family members of man who died in a snowmobiling accident two years ago will finally get to give him a proper burial.
In 2011, Shawn Berthrel, 22, went snowmobiling with a group of friends on the Maquoketa River. Berthel and another rider fell through the ice. The friend made it out alive but Bethrel's body wasn't recovered until yesterday in the Mississippi River north of Sabula.
The Corps of Engineers discovered the remains while dredging in the sand. Bethrel's parents say losing a child is never easy but they are relieved authorities were able to find him.
"I always thought something would be found, some day I just never knew when and how long would it be," said Cherie Hammerand, Shawn's mother.
Bethrel's parents say they spent the entire summer after the accident looking for him. His body will be sent to Ankeny for an official autopsy.
