There are efforts to make sure residents are alerted in emergency situations.
Whiteside County Sheriff's Department is introducing a notification system called NIXLE that will do just that by way of texts and emails.
Authorities say they want to connect with people through technology while informing them.
"Just recently with the pipeline explosion in Erie, the company that owned the pipeline called for an evacuation within a mile of the explosion, and this would've been very beneficial as far as being able to contact the residents," said Sgt. Kristopher Schmid of Whiteside County.
When there is a missing person or severe weather, the NIXLE will be able to notify anyone who is signed up to receive alerts and it's also a way to send the police anonymous crime tips.
