Coalition Looks To Expand Highway 61

Posted: Updated:

A highway coalition is pushing for an expansion in an effort to increase the employment rate in southeast Iowa counties.

The Highway 61 coalition wants to turn the highway into four lanes from Grandview to Burlington. Right now it is only two lanes.
They say it's important to expand the 35 mile stretch to lure more businesses to the area. Officials already expect 25-thousand trucks on Highway 61 due to a new fertilizer plant in Lee County.
IDOT has decided to fund the expansion of a six mile section near Grandview but regional officials say more needs to be done.

"This is kind of a hot spot for industry, it always has been," said Vernon Meierotteo. "But the problem has been the infrastructure. Specifically the highway system."

The coalition has requested funding from the Department of Transportation commissioners but commissioners say there just isn't the funding available to complete the project.
