Mud and dirt are causing Riverside Pool to close for cleaning.
All the rain overnight and Monday during the day left a muddy mess at the Riverside Aquatic Center in Moline. Early on Monday, staffers found the pool was murky from water and dirt that ran down from the nearby hill.
Part of the problem is a project going on to stabilize erosion at the neighboring cemetery. Also, since the slides were removed over winter, the grass hasn't completely grown leaving a lot of open dirt. The pool manager says this adds to an already rough swim season.
"When this happens not much you can do other than just close, start from scratch, clean things up and get back going as soon as we're ready," said Steven Ybarra.
Public Works crews say there were erosion control measures in place, but this was just too much water for them to handle. They'll have to empty, clean, and refill the pool, so it will likely be several days before it's ready to reopen.
