A murder suspect is behind bars in Rock Island this weekend. 22-year-old "AJ" Albert Coats, of Davenport, is accused of shooting 25-year-old Amanda Abbott, of Davenport, to death early Saturday morning.
The victim's family tells us that Coats was Abbott's ex-boyfriend, and the two still hung out.
Police say Abbott was dead inside her home on West First Street in Davenport when they arrived at the scene of the shooting.
While investigating, they got information that Coats might be in Milan.
Davenport, Rock Island and Milan police teamed up and eventually found him at a trailer park there.
Neighbors at the trailer park tell us about a dozen police were in the area for two hours with shields, guns and flashlights. They say there was a standoff between police and Coats for twenty minutes before he came out of a friend's trailer.
Police then took him into custody.
This isn't the first time Coats has found himself in trouble with the law. In April, 2011, he was charged in Scott County with carrying weapons, and was put on probation for a year.
Coats is in the Rock Island County Jail awaiting extradition to Scott County on warrants charging him with second-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm and theft third degree.
Meantime, Abbott's family members tell us they can't believe what happened.
"I started bawling. It freaked me out. I didn't believe it. I didn't want to believe it. Nobody did," Candace Jackson, the victim's cousin, said.
Abbott's family says they've been outside her house all day mourning.
They say Abbott's five-year-old daughter witnessed the murder and is devastated.
