Senior Josh Byrne from Davenport Central High is getting national attention for this artwork.
A love of both art and insects is getting one Davenport Central High student national attention. Senior Josh Byrne has a portfolio full of sketches of everything from beetles to meal worms. He also loves making wire sculptures and often uses live insects he raises at home as models. His work won him a silver medal prize for the 2013 National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards where he was chosen out of thousands of entries.
"A lot of the competing art has a message or something else people are usually more drawn to. I'm really glad people appreciate this," said Byrne.
The awards ceremony on the 31st is at Carnegie Hall in New York City but because of conflicts Byrne won't be able to attend. His teachers predict this is the first of many great accomplishments for him.
