Closing Two Elementary Schools In Moline

[image] The Moline School District has voted to close Ericcson and Garfield Elementary Schools.

On Monday, the Moline School District decided the fate of two elementary schools as school leaders voted to close Ericsson and Garfield schools.

This has been an emotional issue from the start. And there are certainly a lot of disappointed community members tonight.

More than 100 people turned out for tonight's school board meeting, about 20 of them speaking out during the public comment period against the plans to close Ericsson and Garfield schools.
Moline school board members speaking during the meeting said this was definitely not an easy decision for them to make. Many said they understood parents and community members concerns, but they had to look at the wider picture and vote for what was best for the entire district.
District Superintendent Dr. Moyer said the school district will be taking community member concerns into consideration as it maps out the details of how the transition will work. He said that planning process will begin first thing tomorrow morning.
The schools are slated to close in two years, giving the district two years to sort out ways to address community members' concerns about this plan.
Many people we spoke to after the vote tonight said you can bet they want to be involved in that planning process.
