We are getting ready to make a difference in the fight against cancer with the Scott County Relay For Life coming up this weekend.
"Because cancer never sleeps, we keep walking to raise money to fight cancer," said Cindy Bruhn, Publicity Chair for the event. It's a day to honor cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and raise funds and awareness to help end cancer forever. Chances are you or someone you know has faced that fight like Bruhn has.
"I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2010. I'm almost a three-year survivor," she said.
Bruhn endured several rounds of chemo and lost her hair in the process. But a couple years ago cancer took away much more than that. She told us, "I also had a friend that died of cancer in 2011, so we named our team after her. Team Tina W."
With this being the 100th anniversary of the American Cancer Society, organizers of the Scott County Relay for Life are hoping to make this year's fundraiser the biggest yet. "People come and have their campsites, form teams, and take turns walking the track," added Bruhn.
One of the most powerful parts of the day is the Luminaria Ceremony. Self-proclaimed "Luminaria Lady" and breast cancer survivor Pam Roesner is helping with that part. "Each one of these bags represents a life and a story behind it," said Roesner.
The bags are purchased in memory of a life lost, to support someone in their current battle, or to honor a survivor. Many have special messages written on them that shine through when the lights go down. "Like the stars in the sky on a night that is so bright. It's a very solemn occasion to know your heart is there with each bag and each person," Roesner added.
It's all about the comradery while contributing what they can to cancer awareness and finding a cure. "You know that these people have walked in those shoes and that's what's important," said Roesner.
The theme this year is "Super Heroes". There's still have plenty of time to get involved. The Relay for Life is this Saturday at the Rivercenter in Davenport. For more information on the event CLICK HERE.
