A portion of Main Avenue in Clinton was blocked off, and nearby homes evacuated, after police received a report of a suspicious item found along side the road. That item was ultimately determined to be harmless.
The call came in from a US Postal Worker, who said that a suspicious item was lying next to the roadway on the north side of Main Avenue.
Officers from the Clinton Police Department and members of the Clinton Fire Department inspected the item and determined, based on its shape and size, that it resembled a possible improvised explosive device.
Several residents in the immediate area were asked to leave their homes for safety purposes, while several other people living further from where the device was found were asked to shelter in place.
Traffic on Maine Avenue was shut down from 10th Street to Mill Creek Parkway.
The State Fire Marshall's Office was called in to inspect the item, and ultimately ruled it to be harmless.
The incident is still under investigation, but there was never any danger to the public.
