Thomson Prison Funding Reportedly In Obama Budget

Posted: Updated:

Money may finally be coming through to activate Thomson Prison.

The prison never fully opened after it was built because of state funding problems.

The federal government bought the prison last year. Now, after waiting so long for something to happen this is welcome news in the Thomson community.

"Well I would think that would be great after it's been sitting there for twelve years without anything done to it," Bonnie Ayala said. "I think that would be great, yeah"

If Congress approves the $166-million request in the President's fiscal year 2014 budget to activate Thomson and two other prisons. The funding would likely cover the entire cost of the facility upgrades and renovations that must take place for the prison to open.

The full process should take about two years.
