Despite a wet evening, all in all it was a beautiful day to be outside - especially for those of us cheering on area Special Olympic athletes.
They were competing in the track and field competition for East Iowa Special Olympics, held at North Scott Jr. High School.
More than 500 athletes participated in events like the 100-meter dash, long jump, and shot put.
Ranging in age from 8 to 76, organizers say all of the athletes have a good time coming together for this event.
"They're all fired up. We started this morning with a parade of athletes and everybody has just been going high since then," Nancy Shannon, director for Special Olympics Iowa East Area, said.
All blue ribbon winners from Saturday's games qualify to go to Special Olympics state games held in Aimes next month.
