Spreading Autism Awareness

Posted: Updated:

Spreading autism awareness as Tuesday marks World Autism Awareness Day. The entire month of April is dedicated to shedding more light on the condition which continues to grow in prevalence.

Families that are sharing their stories include the Medingers in Clinton. Nine-year-old Kyle has a very severe form of autism and is not able to verbally communicate. His mother wishes there were more resources in her area to help and that the public would better understand the struggles so many families face.

"He's my bean. It's hard to sit there and watch him and not know what you can do to make it better," said Jennifer Medinger. "We need care groups for parents to get together so we can have suggestions to help each other out. We can all sit down and talk."

A new government study shows one in 50 children have some form of autism. For World Autism Awareness Day thousands of people are coming together to "light it up blue" by wearing the color and even changing porch lights to blue to help shine a light on autism.
