Sherrard Community Mourns Loss Of 5 At Vigil

Posted: Updated:

The Sherrard community came together Wednesday night, still coming to grips with the loss of 5 lives in an overnight house fire.

It was standing room only at a vigil where organizers had to bring out extra chairs for the dozens of families packing into Preemption's United Methodist to remember the lives lost and mourn together.

Four children at a sleepover and one adult were killed when fire ripped through this rural Sherrard home.

Crews say they were called out at about one in the morning and the double-wide was on fire with people trapped inside.

We know the man who lives there was able to escape with his two sons. He tried to get back in to the people still inside, but the fire was too much. He was burned and transported to a hospital.

A woman and four children perished in the blaze, the oldest just 15.

"It's hard," family friend Mike Iverson said. "I coached some of the kids in softball, baseball. It's a horrible thing for the community, what we're facing now."

The pastor at tonight's vigil told area families that reaching out to each other with hugs and through tears will help them heal.
