Proposed 1-cent Tax For Henry County Schools

Nine school districts in Henry County are hoping that a one cent sales tax increase could help in improving facilities and they're trying to gain support for the April 9th ballot.

The one cent sales tax is expected to generate $3 million which would be distributed to the nine districts in the county.
The Cambridge School District says it is dealing with a leaky roof and an old boiler that needs to be replaced and Geneseo High School needs a new auditorium that can accommodate more than 450 seats, which is what the current auditorium holds now.

"They're not all just wishes and wants," Geneseo Superintendent Scott Kuffel said. "Many on the list would be required."

School officials believe a one cent sales tax is better than asking property owners for a property tax increase.
The one-cent sales tax can only be used to pay for building improvements and maintenance.
If it passes April 9th, the funds would start to be used next year.
