Clinton Police Need More Evidence Space

Posted: Updated:

Police departments are required to store evidence for various length of times but the Clinton Police Department is struggling to keep up with its growing evidence room.

By law, the nature of the crime determines how long evidence stays locked away. If it's a murder case they keep the evidence forever.

Police say 50 years ago, officers only took pictures of the crime scenes. Now police collect evidence and some of those items take up large amounts of space.

"There are computers now and a lot of computer crimes so we have to deal with large, bulkier pieces of evidence," Clinton Captain Tom Bohle said.

The city is giving the police department a vacant city building to help store some of the items.

Police say this is only a temporary fix and the department could grow out of this space too.
