Rock Island Looks Toward Referendum to Upgrade Courthouse

Posted: Updated:

Rock Island county residents got the chance to learn more about a referendum on an upcoming ballot which could create or renovate the courthouse.

It needs upgrading and county officials wants taxpayers to support expanding the powers of the county building commission.

If that happens, commissioners could find funding for construction of a new courthouse and other future projects.

"These are buildings that over 100 years old and at some point they just don't meet standard and code anymore," Rock Island County board chairman Phillip Banaszek said.

On April 9th voters will get the chance to grant or deny the building commission authority to find financing for construction.
