The world's 1.2 billion Catholics have a new leader.
Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio from Argentina is the first Pope from the Americas and the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium.
Tens of thousands of people braved a cold rain to watch for hours and then a wild cheer went up when the white smoke poured out of the chimney on top of the Sistine Chapel and finally Pope Francis emerged onto the balcony and asking the faithful to pray for him.
"Buona Sera," Pope Francis said.
Pope Francis laid his first blessing on the city, the world and "all men and women of good will."
Pope Francis will head back to the Vatican Hotel and then his installation is on Tuesday.
