Galesburg Looking At Social Ordinance

Posted: Updated:

Galesburg city leaders are sending a message of responsibility to adults with a social host liability law in the works.

The ordinance will fine those who host gatherings or parties where underage drinking takes place with penalties between $250 and $1000.
City leaders are pursuing a social host law hoping to cut down on underage drinking.

"If the folks there don't apply the safeguards to ensure that the people are underage don't end up drinking, then we have the opportunity to pursue them," Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza said.

The ordinance will not change the current law that fines anyone under 21 caught drinking.
If Council approves, it will go into effect right away.
In Iowa, Clinton County's social host ordinance goes into effect today.
