The Pope Steps Aside

Posted: Updated:

Pope Benedict the Sixteenth stunned virtually everyone by announcing he will step down at the end of the month.

An elaborate search to fill one of the most prestigious jobs in the world is underway.

85 year-old Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger said that he no longer has the strength to lead the Roman Catholic Church, and it needs to be guided. He will step down on February 28th.

"I just always admired him as a scholar, as a priest, as a holy man, and now my admiration for him is even higher, because of his humility," Cardinal Timothy Dolan said.

After the Pope steps down the process of electing a new one begins. A conclave of 118 Cardinals will gather to make that decision.

The Vatican hopes there will be a new Pope in place by Easter Sunday.
