Brennan Faces The Senate

Posted: Updated:

John Brennan went before a Senate panel for his confirmation hearing to be the nation's next C.I.A. Director.

Now congress knows more about his work with the controversial drone program.

Before the hearing The White House released a classified report outlining the legal rationale behind the drone program he has managed.

Brennan weighed in on the lethal strikes targeting American terror suspects overseas without a trial.

"The President has insisted that any actions we take will be legally grounded, will be thoroughly anchored in intelligence, will have the appropriate review process, approval process," Brennan said.

Brennan also answered questions about enhanced interrogation techniques, like waterboarding, used by the C.I.A. when he worked there at a high level during the Bush administration.

Four years ago he withdrew his name from consideration to head the agency because of the torture debate but now lawmakers concerns are expected to keep him from being confirmed.
