A community came together for an emotional welcome home for one of its own Saturday.
Nine-year-old Charly Erpelding was diagnosed with cancer last year, and had been in and out of chemotherapy for the last nine months.
She finished her last round at University Hospitals in Iowa City this weekend, and dozens of family and friends lined the streets of her neighborhood to celebrate and finally welcome her home.
She was escorted by several firefighters and police officers from Davenport and Bettendorf and greeted by signs, gifts, and balloons.
All of it was a complete surprise - just for her.
"It's very exciting, it's a lot of things, it's very good and I'm super happy to see everybody and it was very good," Erpelding said.
She had surgery last August to remove a tumor in her chest, and her dad tells us she will have to go back to Iowa City for checkups, but this weekend she is cancer-free.
Charly has much more to look forward to, too.
She and her family will be going on a Disney cruise at the end of February courtesy of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
