Davenport City Leaders Vote on Budget

Posted: Updated:

After weeks of debate the Davenport City Council is set to vote on the city's budget Wednesday. The proposal cuts jobs and raises taxes, but it would make up for Davenport's
$4 million dollar deficit.

After weekly meetings and Saturday sessions Davenport Aldermen finally have a budget in front of them.  But they know there's still a lot of opposition to it. The proposal from the City Administrator includes the city's first property tax increase since 2006. That affects not just homeowners, but also some business owners.

And many of them were at last week's meeting warning the council about how raising their taxes would hurt their bottom lines. The city itself also would have to live on less with each department cutting its expenses by five percent.

Revenues will also be decreased if traffic and red light cameras are removed, a move being considered by the State of Iowa.
