Beyond the Desk: Iowa Caucus: Behind the Scenes

Posted: Updated:

This week I had the rare treat as a journalist to cover the big story: the Iowa Caucuses. It's unusual when the story that has such widespread international interest comes to your backyard. When it does, you want to be on the frontlines.

It was an experience I'll never forget. Reporters from all over the world, speaking different languages all converging on Des Moines, Iowa. The set-up was unreal. A room that went on forever with stages, bleachers, cameras and lights. Then there were the faces. When I first walked in, there was DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz being surrounded by a huge half-circle of press. Then Michael Steele (former RNC chairman) walks by. Then there's Andrea Mitchell hosting her live show, NBC's Chuck Todd talking loudly on a Bluetooth, and wait, is that-- yes that's Tom Brokaw casually chatting with a couple people just to my left. Wow, have I died and gone to media heaven?

Ok, I'm letting my nerd factor show here. I supposed the real awe of it all was the fact that we were all there to tell the same story. To report to the world who Republican Iowans want in the White House and to let the world know who may actually have a shot at getting there. Ok that's cool.

But, if I can go back to my nerdiness for a minute-- you have to know about the Google Hangout room! I wanted to live there. Free food-- including cupcakes, free Court Avenue Brewery beer (one of my favorite breweries), treadmills and bean bags-- BEAN BAGS!

Need I say more? Guess it's probably a good idea these things only happen once every four years otherwise I would probably get fired for never wanting to leave.
