(MYFOX NATIONAL) - The Cleveland Cavaliers NBA team will attempt to set a new Guinness World Record during their game Friday night against the Detroit Pistons by endeavoring to get as many fans at the game as possible to wear a Snuggie reports AOL News .

The record the Cavaliers are looking to break is for "Largest Gathering of People Wearing Fleece Blankets."

Team branded Snuggies will be passed out to an estimated 20,000 fans to wear during the March 5 game where a Guinness arbitrator will certify the event. Fans who participate will receive a "commemorative magnet certificate" if the record is set.

According to NBA.com , the Snuggies will be draped over every seat and fans must wear the blanket for the first five minutes of the game.

Cavaliers President Len Komoroski said, "The Cavs 'XL' season keeps getting bigger and bigger with this attempt to set a Guinness World Record. Partnering with KeyBank and Snuggie blankets to create an event where our fans are an integral part of the success to give Cleveland the bragging rights of a Guinness World Record makes it a community team effort that is all the more fun."

The Cavaliers Web site also has a countdown clock counting down the days until the event and attempt to break the world record. Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao is featured wearing one of the designer Snuggies.

Scott Boilen, president and CEO of Allstar Products Group who created and markets the Snuggie told USA Today , "Every once in a while, a product transcends advertising to become part of pop culture."

Boilen is expected to attend the world record event reports AOL News .

Snuggies have sold an estimated 20 million units, and continue to be a popular gift item.
